Redefining how business customers buy Lutron VIVE
Team & Role
- Team: Three Product Managers, One Engineering Leader, Three UX Designers, 10+ software engineers
- My Role: Product Owner
Project Highlights
- Demonstrated a way to work harmoniously with Product Managers
- Used 5 Whys and other techniques to reframe the problem multiple times
- Used quick learning experiments to turn a failure into success
The Problem
The business wanted to grow the sales of its flagship office IoT product – Vive. We worked with the business team to help create a problem statement – How might we scale the Vive business (YoY growth of 50%) without proportionally increasing the workload on Reps/Distributors – Create Vive Farmers. They didn’t have a specific role/persona in mind.
The Methods
We started the project with stakeholder interviews. Next, we built a journey map with SMEs and wrote the information in three buckets – what we know, what we think we know, and what we don’t know. Based on this map, we created a research study. We did interviews and contextual inquiry. We recruited the candidates using a screener. In parallel with did some secondary research. We collected all the data and used affinity mapping, personas, journey mapping, and insights prioritization to develop the top insights. Then, we created how-might-we statements to do brainstorming. We did company-wide brainstorming, generating 100s of ideas. Then, we prioritized the ideas with business using criteria like novelty, strategic fit, and tech expertise. We created hot teams to detail and implemented the ideas. We brought in users and experts to review the implementations and give feedback. Next, we made the wizard-of-oz version for the final prototype and gave it to the users. We created the design goals and did some placemaking. Next, we created user flows and different fidelities of wireframes. We created the success criteria, did the visual themes and designs, and launched the software.
The initial launch didn’t achieve the success metrics, so we decided to do quick learning cycles, and after some iterations, we succeeded.
The Solution & Results
We created a tool for Estimators/ Project Managers at Electrical Contracting companies to budget Vive in hours instead of days. In addition, after completing the budget they can get supporting materials to send to the customers to ‘seal the deal’.
User
- We reduced the time to estimate the Lutron Vive system from days to hours
- We made it easier for users to create design options, hence, happier end customers.
Business
With this project, Vive was able to grow 28% YoY. We didn’t achieve our target of 50% growth, which was more aspirational, but still, the business appreciated the collaboration and is wanting to have more in the future
Innovation
We received a patent for our work on this project
