Empowering lighting designers to work with Lutron effortlessly
Team & Role
- Team: 2 Researchers, 2 Designers, 1 Product Manager, 8+ Engineers (Data Sci, ML, Software)
- My Role: Design Leader
Project Highlights
- Used quick and cheap pretendo-types to bring alignment
- Using emerging technologies like extended reality (AR, VR), Machine Learning, and AI to solve user problems
- Implemented fast learning cycles using the principles from the Lean Startup Book by Eric Reis
The Problem
How might we make it easier for Lighting Designers to do business with Lutron?
Lighting designers are the biggest proponents of Lutron on any project, so the hypothesis was that if we make it easier for the Lighting Designers to work with Lutron products they would want Lutron on more of their projects, and also, it will be easier for the new Lighting Designers to start working with Lutron; hence, increasing Lutron’s growth.
The Methods
We used the double diamond design thinking process and principles from The Lean Startup and The Right It.
We did contextual inquiry sessions, interviews, surveys, and user workshops to understand the problem. We synthesized the data using affinity mapping, insights statements, jobs-to-be-done, journey maps, and personas. After discussions with the Product and Engineering teams, we picked our target persona and re-defined the problem statement. We diverged and used brainstorming techniques like brainwriting and analogous brainstorming to generate multiple ideas. We picked the top ideas and used preto-typing to evaluate the ideas with the users. Next, we developed lo-fi, mid-fi, and hi-fi wireframes and did continuous user validation to ensure success. We defined the success metrics. We did post-launch research and backlog grooming to ensure long-term success.
The Solution & Results
Our phase 1 of the work has empowered lighting designers to do most of the work on their own
And after our future work, we hope to enable the lighting designers to focus on what they love doing, which is the Lighting Design of the space, and not have to learn the tools or meta data about the project. (under development)
User
- Lighting Designers expressed extreme happiness
- Reduced the time to do Aim&Focus by 40%
Business
- Seeing at least 20% more specs from current lighting designers.
Innovation
We have filed several patents but they are still under review so I am unable to post them
