Reimagining the setup process for the smart lighting systems
Team & Role
- Team: Two Product Designers, One Engineering Leader, One Product Manager, Two Field Service Engineers
- My Role: Lead Product Designer
Project Highlights
- Helped validate the new setup process without actual hardware
- Hacked the existing hardware and the app to include BLE chips and signal strength to show the benefits
The Problem
The existing smart device (lights and shades) setup process is complicated and time-consuming. As the density of smart devices and labor costs increase, the current process will become unviable.
The Methods
We created several HMW (how might we) statements to attack the problem from different angles. Next, we assembled minds from different teams (sales, product, engineering, UX) for ideation sessions. After the ideation sessions, we prioritized the top ideas via dot-voting short-term and long-term ideas. We engaged the SMEs to help converge the top ideas. Once we had an idea narrowed down, we did idea storyboarding and in-context app storyboarding because the solution was at the intersection of physical and digital. After storyboarding, we did rapid prototyping to learn from the users and understand the engineering constraints.
The Solution & Results
We created a BLE based app for setting up smart devices
User
- Reduced the time to set up by 50%
- We got featured in the EC&M magazine for improving the lives of Electrical Contractors. Feedback included reduced neck problems, increased win rates, and the ability to do more jobs with less labor during the pandemic.
Business
- We got featured in CEDIA – Lutron Installers were excited and placed pre-orders
Innovation
We were able to file a couple of patents for our innovative technique to set up
- Commissioning and controlling load control devices (patent link)
- Display screen or portion thereof with animated graphical user interface (patent link)
